The Filmmaker:
Kyla Romero is a writer, filmmaker, and Psychology graduate from the Philippines. From her beginnings as a fiction writer and playwright, Kyla has written works that tackled womanhood, loss of innocence, and coming of age. One of her plays, entitled “A Little Game”, showed a vivid account of childhood abuse and was staged at the Short and Sweet Theater Festival in 2019. In 2021, she co-wrote “Ria”, a feature project which gained a special mention in Talents Tokyo 2021 and received the CNC Pitch Award at the 2022 Festival de Cannes La Résidence. In 2022, her first official short film, “Dosena”, won 3rd place at the 34th Gawad Alternatibo in the Philippines and was also officially selected for the En Corto short film section of Spanish Film Festival Manila and the Mata-Asya Out of Competition Section of 2022 Bakunawa Cinema of the Young. In 2023, Dosena became part of the official selection of Busan International Short Film Festival under the Rendezvous with AFiS Hub of Asia. Moreover, it received a Best Short Film nomination from the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards, one of the oldest and most prestigious award-giving bodies in the Philippines. Kyla is also one of the two writers of Hinakdal, a short film which won the Audience Choice award, NETPAC award, and Best Screenplay award at the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2023 Short Film Category.
