After a successful opening of the year-long celebration of Jay Altarejos cinema last August 27, 2022 by 2076 Kolektib at the MOWELFUND where cinephiles, educators, and artists attended. 

The celebration dubbed as ALT-R Heroes, based on the alternative protagonists of Altarejos cinema, continues to have free screenings both online and at the 2076 Kolektib Headquarters in Quezon City.

 

But this week is special because UP Film Center in UP Diliman is joining the celebration.

This year marks 15 years of bold independent filmmaking with acclaimed big-screen director Jay Altarejos. UPFI Film Center salutes him with a special run for one of the most significant films of his career as the country’s premier state university holds its own Pride Month this October. Watch Walang Kasarian ang Digmang Bayan at Cine Adarna on October 22!”

 

The event will be the Cinema Premiere of the film which had its online premiere last year.  This is also to show our gratitude for the seven (7) nominations that the film garnered from the esteemed Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino/Gawad URIAN, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing for Jay Altarejos. Other nominations are: Best Music for Arbi Barbarona, Best Sound for Drew Milallos, and Best Supporting Actor for Sandino Martino. Jay shares the Best Editing nomination with co-editor Gerone Centeno.

 

Walang Kasarian ang Digmang Bayan is about filmmaker PAOLO, played by OLIVER AQUINO, who experiences injustice during the Duterte administration. And this awakens his social consciousness leading him to side and fight for and with the people.

 

Tickets are discounted at P150.00 for Senior Citizens, students, and PWDs, while the full price is P200.00.

KASAL is the 2014 Cinemalaya Best Film, Directors Showcase which is about the same  filmmaker PAOLO in Walang Kasarian ang Digmang Bayan. Younger and more liberal in his world-view. It is the first film that broached the subject of marriage equality in Philippine cinema.

 

PINK HALO-HALO has preceded Kasal in Cinemalaya in 2010. It narrates the story of a child, NATOY, who sees his wounded soldier-father asking for help on national television. This incident has snatched his innocence, along with the other events that follow. Wars can never be too far away from a poor Filipino family. Wars that deprive parents of their children, children of their siblings, spouses of their partners, and children of their parents, together with the memory of the sweet, pink halo-halo.

 

After the screening, a master class by Jay Altarejos follows on Pink Halo-Halo being the genesis of the Altarejos cinematic world. All male characters have begun with Natoy of Ticao Island in Masbate. Whose mother has been forced to leave the island and has thrived in different places together with her children. The journey would bring the mother and child to Manila, Laguna, Taiwan, and in Pampanga in Altarejos’ latest film PAMILYA SA DILIM.

 

JINO TO MARI is a fitting film as a prelude to All Souls Day celebration. The film starts the day before it and ends the following day with its protagonists played by OLIVER AQUINO and ANGELA CORTEZ devoid of dignity after they have been hired to do a porno film but abused during the shoot. Filmmakers Jay Altarejos, Manuel Garcellano, and Marco Mata will have a candid discussion on the values of an artist in relation to, not only achieving their cinematic goals, but also as living as a cultural worker.

 

Aside from the screenings for the ALT-R Heroes, 2076 Kolektib is busy with the post production of FINDING DADDY BLAKE, PAMILYA SA DILIM, and THE LONGEST NIGHT. Currently in production is GREATEST PERFORMANCE with Sunshine Cruz, Oliver Aquino and Soliman Cruz. 

 

Jay Altarejos, together with 2076 Kolektib members, filmmakers Manuel Garcellano, Marco Bertillo Mata, and actor Oliver Aquino, continues to engage with the audience and basic sectors in the fulfillment of their quest for cinema of consciousness.
