THE FILMMAKER
Toni Cañete is a filmmaker based in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental. She is a recent film graduate from the University of the Philippines - Diliman. As a daughter, an only child, a bereaved sister, an eldest-grandchild in a women-led patriarchal household in the middle-class suburbs of Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, and as a queer filmmaker, Toni seeks to create films which exhibit the capability of young women to spearhead the revolution everywhere, even, and most especially, within the confines of their own home. Her films – pasilong, dala, and desilya – have been striving to do just that. pasilong’s greatest feat to date is being hailed ‘First Place’ in the Documentary Category of the ‘Ika-34 Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video’, while desilya’s is bagging the ‘Best Mindanao Film’ and ‘Best Film’ awards in the most recent 21st Mindanao Film Festival and Cine de Oro Film Festival 2023, respectively.
